Talk:D&C 57:1-16

I am trying to run down all references to commerce, contracts, and debt in the D&C sections dealing with the law of consecration and stewardship. I am trying to figure out exactly what is being said in verses 8 and 9. In particular, does anyone know what the "license" in verse 9 refers to? --Nathan Oman 21:40, 18 June 2007 (CEST)

No clue, Nate, but I did notice in a quick GospeLink search that there is reference to a "priesthood license" in Far West Record: Minutes of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1830-1844 by Donald Q. Cannon, Lyndon W. Cook, for example on p. 245:
"William BATSON (1790-?), a native of New Jersey, lost his priesthood license during the Hulet Branch trial. It was apparently restored, however, since he received a mission assignment in 1844."
So maybe this is simply referring to something like a priesthood right or calling rather than some sort of governmental license, as I was first inclined to read this....
I also noticed a little article on this time period in BYU Studies, vol. 36 (1996-1997) in the article "Light on the 'Mission to the Lamanites'" by Leland Gentry. It seems to talk about some of the conflicts with the Native Americans, complementing what Keith Lane said a LDS-PHIL regarding the note in Stephen Robinson's D&C commentary. --RobertC 23:22, 18 June 2007 (CEST)
