Historical setting[edit]

  • Time. The New Testament tells the story of the dispensation of Jesus Christ in two parts.
  • Jesus's ministry. The story in the Gospels begins with Jesus's birth about 1 BC, tells of his mortal ministry, and ends with his death and resurrection about 33 AD. A harmonized chronology of Jesus's ministry is found at Gospels harmony and history.
  • Apostolic ministry. Acts and the epistles pick up the story following Jesus's resurrection and recount the spread of the early Christian church and of growing apostasy within the church through about 100 AD. A chronology of the ministry of the apostles and their epistles is found at Historical Overview of the New Testament.
