a song of (within) songs: psalm 54
O God; give ear to the words of my mouth--
by night on my bed
sought I him whom my soul
(midst oppressors) doth love:
save me, O God above--
for the strangers are ris'n,
who have set up their gods
(by my bed) and not Thee--
yet they shall not cut me:
as they lift up their hands
and I lift up my voice,
cut them off in Thy truth,
eye for eye, tooth for tooth--
now Thy double reward
fills the strangers and me:
though both they and I bow,
yet only I will rise now
O God; give ear to the words of my mouth--
now a fountain of gardens,
in the midst of the fires,
leaving them of concision,
filled with almighty vision,
beckon I my Beloved
in His garden repose,
there to eat and to drink,
while I on Him think--
now the spirits nearby wending
sing in cloven tongues fiery:
eat, O friends; yea,
drink, and make yourselves gay--
now I witness the lights
gathered into the sun:
a stone dove (from a well
of live waters) scatt'rs hell
O God; give ear to the words of my mouth--
who is this that appears
as the morning's dawn breaks?
is it I on a throne,
reaping all He has sown?
after mine eye hath seen
(by mine Helper, my God,
and those who me uphold),
have I head of fine gold?
God, Thyself, call'st me beautiful,
namest Thou me Thy dove
so with sceptre and crown
shall I bow myself down--
for I will sacrifice,
and I will praise Thy name,
reasoning on the One
fair as moon, clear as sun
