Verses 8:21-25[edit]
Rob, do you have an opinion on what the answer to your question is? --Matthew Faulconer 04:55, 26 Apr 2005 (CEST)
- I think I've always interpreted this literally--that people were actually moving mountains again. If so, then maybe our faith doesn't seem quite as powerful? Even if our faith isn't as powerful, not sure if we should use the comparison to urge us on to greater faith? Other places seems to indicate that we can take the presence of certain spiritual gifts as signs that we do or don't have faith (Moro 7:37). --Rob Fergus
- I interpret this literally as well. They may have moved mountains but note that the scriptures tells us only that they "could"--not that they did actually move mountains. In contrast the verse does say that they did "cause prisons to tumble to the earth."
- In response to your question, I think we absolutely should compare ourselves to those we read about in the scriptures. Such comparisons should encourage us to seek the good gifts those people had. The scriptures also warn us not to look for a sign to consume upon our lusts D&C 46:9. I if I desire to move a mountain I must ask myself why. If the answer is because I want to be able to say to myself "I can move a mountain therefore I have a lot of faith--aren't I much more righteous than those around me" then I think that is an example of looking for a sign to fulfill my lusts. But if like Moses I desire to do such a miracle to save the church, then my desire is good--whether or not my desire is in line with the Lord's will,i.e. whether or not what I desire is fulfilled through faith as it was with Moses. --Matthew Faulconer 11:29, 29 Apr 2005 (CEST)
- PS If other's think this is an ok explanation I'll revise/add some stuff on this to the commentary page later. Others, please feel free to do it before I get around to it if you would like. --Matthew Faulconer 11:29, 29 Apr 2005 (CEST)
Verses 9:26-30[edit]
Woops, forgot to login on these previos edits.... I'm still just trying to get familiar with the site. One thing that I'm not clear about is when and where cross-references are appropriate. Of course you could just type in keywords to find cross-references on your own, or look at the Topical Guide, so maybe these are a bit superfluous. My thought is they help in studying "what is belief" (although maybe that puts it into the 'lexical notes' context?). --RobertC 16:44, 13 Aug 2005 (CEST)
- I think the way you handled them was just fine. But I'm a newbie too. Eric 17:11, 13 Aug 2005 (CEST)
- The site is new. So, I guess we are all newbies. Looks good to me. --Matthew Faulconer 07:44, 14 Aug 2005 (CEST)
Verses 9:31-37[edit]
I removed the question related to why it was that they wrote in reformed egyptian. It seemed that from the context that the answer is given in verse 33. Let me know if maybe I am missing something in reading this. --Matthew Faulconer 23:25, 13 Dec 2005 (UTC)
