Verses 28:21-25: Hell

Eric, I posted something about what hell means on 1 Ne 15:31-36. Does that help? I didn't address the question of whether hell includes the terrestrial and telestial kingdoms. I'm not sure. It is interesting that Nephi discusses the kingdom of God and hell but doesn't discuss the Celestial, Terrestial or Telestial kingdoms directly. It may be that Nephi didn't know about the 3 kingdoms of glory. Or, it could be that he simply doesn't think they are important to his discussion. --Matthew Faulconer 09:20, 30 Aug 2005 (CEST)

Yes, that's helpful. Part of my question has to do whether we're talking about a place of eternal punishment or perhaps something more temporal. In some passages, one could argue either way, at least on the face of it. I know that in the New Testament, there are two Greek words that are translated as hell (actually three, but one of them tartaroo, is used only once), and they don't mean the same thing at all. So that makes me wonder whether the word, at least in English, always has the same meaning. Part of them problem is that, at least in our culture, our image of hell comes to us from non-Biblical literature, and it's easy to impose that image on what the author was really trying to say. To me your question seems exactly the same as Laman and Lemual's 1 Ne 15:31. Would you agree? "And they said unto me: Doth this thing mean the torment of the body in the days of probation (today), or doth it mean the final state of the soul after the death of the temporal body, or doth it speak of the things which are temporal?"
