19:11-15: On Israel's God versus the gods of the nations[edit]

This is an important and fascinating topic, whoever posted the exegesis. Thanks. I have to admit that I'm not sure exactly how universal this sentiment is, however. What you explain here is certainly true in, say, the Book of Abraham, and there is no question but that it is true in the Book of Mormon, in Deuteronomic writings, and in the New Testament, but there are a good number of passages in the Old Testament that suggest otherwise. A number of scholars have begun to argue that the Hebrews believed, at least before the Deuteronomists were writing, that God (El) had seventy sons, and that each son (one of which was YWHW) was assigned to a nation (this is all somehow curiously linked with the idea of the seventy elders, etc.). So I'm not sure how strictly to take something like this, since this text is Deuteronomic. --Joe Spencer 13:31, 18 Oct 2006 (UTC)
