Talk:JS-H 1:1-26
Verse 19
Hey, temporarily removed this from questions:
"* In verse 19, does "professors" mean those who profess the faith, or does it refer to seminary instructors?"
do we really want to potentially slam seminary instructors here?Rob Fergus 18:31, 15 Sep 2005 (CEST)
- The reference is to the professors of Protestant and Catholic seminaries. Because of the different meaning of the word in LDS vocabulary, I'll rewrite. Eric 18:40, 15 Sep 2005 (CEST)
Verses 16-20
All the questions given are good questions. To answer them, I think, it would be important to know more about the religious climate of the time. I find it interesting that a fair number of alternative Christian movements (such as Adventism and Christian Science) had their origins around the same time that the LDS church started, which makes me think that there might have been a particular emptiness (I don't know if that's the word I want) in the churches at that time. I also don't know how the creeds were viewed at that time. What I'm getting at is that I wonder if Joseph Smith had had the first vision in 2005 if he would have been told the same things. (I'm not presupposing an answer either way.) Eric 18:41, 15 Sep 2005 (CEST)
Interesting point...thanks for the new wordingRob Fergus 21:32, 15 Sep 2005 (CEST)
- Eric, just to clarify the question you are asking. Is your question whether Joseph Smith would have been told the same thing in the first vision? In other words, are you asking whether the criticism of the various sects that the Lord makes in verse 19 might not be less harsh today because the same problems aren't as severe today? --Matthew Faulconer 02:21, 16 Sep 2005 (CEST)
- Exactly. I don't know if that's the case or not and, like I said, I'm not presupposing an answer one way or another. But one could at least argue that some of the non-LDS churches are "closer" to the truth than they were 200 years ago, or that they are acting in a more Christlike manner than they were back then, or that they are doing a better job of following the light they have been given. (And for that matter, one could argue the opposite.) So I think it's possible that the criticism would be less harsh today — there would still be criticism (after all, some of the things taught in various churches are outright wrong), but perhaps it would be worded differently. And then maybe not. Eric 17:08, 16 Sep 2005 (CEST)
