I will focus here on Rom 7:15, for the purpose of comparing and contrasting KJV and JST versions.

Preceding discussion

Chapter 6

  • Baptism as death and resurrection (v. 4)
  • Be dead to sin (vv. 6-12)
  • Yield to God instead of sin (vv. 13-20)
  • Wages/fruits of serving God are eternal life, instead of death like serving sin yields (vv. 21-23)

Chapter 7

  • Law hath dominion over us until our death in Christ, like husband over woman (vv. 1-4)
  • Through newness of spirit we are delivered from deadness of law (vv. 5-6)
  • How is law not sin? (vv. 7-14)
  • The law slays me b/c of sin (vv. 7-11)
  • I am carnal and therefore slain, not b/c law equals death or sin (vv. 12-14)

KJV of verses 15-25

Outline

  • I am powerless to sin (vv. 15-21)
  • I obey law, but desire othewise (vv. 15-16)

OR

  • I don't obey law, but wish I did (vv. 15-16)
  • Mind serves law of God but flesh serves law of sin (vv. 22-25)

What I don't understand

  • Verse 17: "it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me"
  • Verse 21: "I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me".

Verse 17

[coming soon!]

JST of verses 15-27

[coming soon!]

Following discussion

Chapter 8

  • We are free of law's condemnation by the Spirit of Christ in us (vv. 1-14)
  • we walk in Spirit not flesh, so problem in vv. 22-25 (KJV) goes away (vv. 1-4)
  • carnal mind implies death, but spirit implies life (vv. 5-6)
  • carnal mind cannot please God (vv. 7-8)
  • spirit makes body dead, but body is quickened by Spirit of Christ (vv. 9-11)
  • Spirit subdues (slays) deeds of body and we become sons of God (vv. 12-14)
