Feast upon the Word provides commentary on the Standard Works of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or in other words, exegesis of Mormon scripture. The Standard Works for the Church of Jesus Christ are: The Old Testament, The New Testament, The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine & Covenants and The Pearl of Great Price. This commentary is provided free to all. In turn, we ask that you freely contribute to this site following our policies.
Feast upon the Word is a collection of thousands of pages. Each page is devoted to analysis of a small passage of the Standard Works. The content on each page is divided into four categories:
- Questions : Questions about the text
- Lexical notes : Notes about the meaning or origin of words
- Exegesis : Explanation and analysis
- External links : Links to other information
See how this works in practice at Alma 13:1-5.
In addition, each commentary page is linked to a separate page for discussion. These discussion pages are a great place to communicate with other editors about the commentary or to make comments on specific subjects related to the verses that don't fit as commentary.
Commentary is growing every day; still many commentary pages have no content and much more help is needed. Your help is needed! The most important way to help is to create and improve the content of this site. If you are not sure how to do this, see the getting started section below. For additional ideas about how to help, go to the community portal.
Getting started
Anyone can add or edit the commentary pages on this site. Here are some simple steps to get started.
- Read the help on posting to commentary pages.
- Find a section of scripture you are interested in (see below)
- Add and revise content by clicking the edit link
- Click "Save page" when you are done
The fact that other people can edit what you write means that you don't have to wait until you have something perfect before you add it. Start by adding something and see what happens.
If you aren't sure that the comment you have to make belongs on the commentary page, post it to the discussion page instead. If you have trouble editing a page look at Help:Editing. For any other help see the main help page.
Finally, if you haven't done so already, please create an account. Though we allow anonymous edits, by creating an account you help create a sense of community here. Further, when you log in, certain personalized features of this site will be available to you that are not available to anonymous users.
Finding scriptures
Find the scripture you are looking for:
- The Old Testament
- The New Testament
- The Book of Mormon
- The Doctrine & Covenants
- The Pearl of Great Price.
Searching for scriptures
The fastest way to get to a scripture is by typing its reference in the search box. You can find the search box on the left of any page on this site below the navigation links. To use the search box to find a scripture commentary page you need to use the standard abbreviations used in the footnotes of the scriptures published by the Church. Also you must type the reference to a single verse rather than to a passage. For example, type:
- 1 Ne 16:28, but not 1 Nephi 16:28
- Mosiah 5:2, but not Mos 5:2
- Philip 2:5, but not Philippians 2:5
- Matt 28:6, but not Matt 28:6-8
