I do most of my scripture study on my computer now and thought I'd keep a list here of software I like to use, both for my own records and for anyone else interested (feel free to leave questions or suggestions of your favorite software, tricks, or shortcuts on the discussion page).
Tablet PC[edit]
I have a Toshiba M200 Tablet PC. I got the pen capabilities primarily for teaching (so I could write equations onscreen while I lecture—where I teach the projector screen covers the chalkboards...). But now I'm addicted b/c the pen seems so much faster and efficient to use than a mouse, esp. if you invest a little time in shortcut commands using a program such as StrokeIt.
Windows software[edit]
- xplorer2: This is Windows Explorer on steroids—allows you to customize links and shortcuts and file searches.
- Maxthon: Tabbed, customizable, IE-based browser. I really like the grouping option in Maxthon. (I haven't experimented much with Firefox/Mozilla.... I actually think irider is more efficient to use than tabbed browsers, but I haven't used it too much, mainly b/c I don't want to figure out how to switch my bookmarks over....)
- Actual Windows Manager: I use this program to size and place windows on my computer. Using StrokeIt I have shortcuts to quickly move windows to fill half the screen.
- Omea: I use this to easily categorize and organize research papers and email (works with Outlook). It's not super stable, so I try not to get too dependent on it, though I wish it would catch on and become more reliable and professional. Using pen shortcuts or drag-dropping to assign categories and then customizing views makes it the best aid to organizing email that I've found.
- Diigo: I'm setting up a new computer and found this little program which has the ability to highlight text on webpages and remember these highlights. I use this in Firefox (finally got sick the IE limitations underlying Maxthon...) and it's esp. useful in following blog discussion. I've used GoogleReader on and off for following blogs, but didn't really like it. This makes it very easy for me to track comments I've already read on each thread, and to mark comments I want to remember and come back to. I've been thinking about getting the LDS Gospel Library, but I'm really only interested in these titles since I think Feast is superior to the functionality of that software.
