In the world but not of the world[edit]
- 1 Jn 2:15-17: Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
- v. 11 - And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee....
- v. 12 - While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

- v. 14 - I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

Better world[edit]

- D&C 25:10: ...lay aside the things of this world, and seek for the things of a better.
- D&C 43:34: ...Treasure these things up in your hearts, and let the solemnities of eternity rest upon your minds.
Hearts set on riches[edit]
- Luke 8:14: And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life....
- 1 Tim 6:10: The love of money is the root of all evil....
- Jacob 2:18: ...before ye seek for riches, seek ye for the kingdom.
- Alma 1:30: The righteous did not set their hearts on riches....
- Alma 4:8: ...the people of the church began to be lifted up in the pride of their eyes, and to set their hearts upon riches and upon the vain things of the world....
- 3 Ne 6:15: ...puffing them up with pride, tempting them to seek for power, and authority, and riches, and the vain things of the world.
- D&C 6:7: Seek not for riches but for wisdom.... (cf. Alma 39:14 and D&C 11:7)
- D&C 121:35: ...hearts are set so much upon the things of this world.
