Relationship to Zechariah. Chapters 1-6 are the first of three major sections in Zechariah. The relationship of Chapters 1-6 to Zechariah as a whole is discussed at Zechariah.
Story. Chapters 1-6 constitute the first of three major units in Zechariah. These chapters contain a sequence of eight visions, plus an introduction and conclusion, that are widely regarded as being organized in the form of a chiasmus.
- A. Zech 1:1-6: Lord commands Israel to turn to him, and he will turn to Israel.
- B. Zech 1:7-17: Vision 1: Four riders in the myrtle trees.
- C. Zech 1:18-21: Vision 2: Four horns and four workers.
- D. Zech 2:1-13: Vision 3: The man with the measuring line.
- E. Zech 3:1-10: Vision 4: High priest Joshua given clean garments.
- E'. Zech 4:1-14: Vision 5: Gold lampstand, Zerubabbel.
- D'. Zech 5:1-4: Vision 6: The flying scroll and the curse.
- C'. Zech 5:5-11: Vision 7: The filthy woman in the basket.
- B'. Zech 6:1-8: Vision 8: Four chariots.
- A'. Zech 6:9-15: Crowning of the Branch who will build the temple if Israel obey.
