Comment from Chickenpig:

It seems quite interesting that Pahoran, as the chief judge, would not listen to the voice of those individuals who wanted a few points of the laws to be changed. As a free government, it should be established that as times change certain points of the law should be changed as well. Does this indicate that Pahoran was acting unrighteously or illegally? No. The answer to this dispute comes in verse five. It states that these 'king-men' were "desirous to overthrow the free government and to establish a king over the land." I'd imagine the laws set about by Mosiah several years ago allowed for 'amendments' to the Nephite law, however, the establishment of a king is against the will of the Lord. These king-men were trying not to simply alter a few points of the law, they were trying to destroy it in its entirety. Pahoran was following the correct design of the laws set forth by Mosiah by rejecting these evil, power seeking individuals. Because Pahoran would not budge, bloodshed eventually fell upon the Nephites internally and wars continued with the Lamanites.
