I think the grammar looks right in the question "Why would Alma have had a vision of Lehi at this point?" If Alma was recounting the vision shortly after he had it, I think you could simply ask "Why would Alma have a vision at this point?" But since he's recounting a vision he had at an earlier point in his life, I think Matthew's grammar is preferable (I definitely think it's more correct...).--RobertC 18:18, 18 Oct 2005 (CEST)

I'm supposedly the grammar expert; at least grammar is what I do for a living. The past tense as used is fine and even preferable here because it's more precise. But I wouldn't object to the present tense. Using the present tense to refer to past events is a common literary device to transport the listener or reader to the present in order to make something more real or relevant, and that could be done here as well. --Eric
