Lexical notes
- The second sentence of verse 11 ("Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.") is not included in all manuscripts. It is often omitted from modern translations.

Exegesis
- It appears from verse 14 that John the Baptist had become extremely well-known and was recognized as a prophet by many.
