Summary[edit]

This heading should be very brief. Click the link above and to the right to edit or add content to this heading. →

Scope of page. Third Nephi Chapter 24-25 contains the Lord's quotation of Malachi chapters 3-4. This page is not intended, however, to address Malachi. It is intended only to address the use of Malachi in Third Nephi. It is therefore suggested that readers consult the pages that do address Malachi 3-4 before viewing this page that addresses Third Nephi 24-25. Contributors are likewise asked to respect this distinction. The idea is that a reader should be able to find content about an original passage from Malachi on the wiki page addressing that passage. This page addressing Third Nephi 24-25 should be limited to discussing the use of Malachi in Third Nephi.

Relationship to Third Nephi. The relationship of Chapters 23b-26 to the rest of Third Nephi is discussed at Third Nephi.

Discussion[edit]

This section is for detailed discussion such as the meaning of a symbol, how a doctrinal point is developed throughout a passage, or insights that can be further developed in the future. Contributions may range from polished paragraphs down to a single bullet point. The focus, however, should always be on understanding the scriptural text consistent with LDS doctrine. • 3 Ne. 26:9. We learn that the more that we learn and believe, the more blessings and knowledge we will receive from the Lord.
  • 3 Ne. 26:11. This verse shows that the Lord, at least sometimes, keeps us from having knowledge in order to try our faith. Compare D&C 19:21-22. There the Lord gives another reason for withholding knowledge: because the receiver is not ready for it.

Unanswered questions[edit]

This section is for questions along the lines of "I still don't understand ..." Please do not be shy. The point of these questions is to identify things that still need to be addressed on this page. Click the link above and to the right to edit or add content to this heading. →

Prompts for life application[edit]

This section is for prompts that suggest ways in which a passage can influence a person's life. Prompts may be appropriate either for private self reflection or for a class discussion. Click the link above and to the right to edit or add content to this heading. →

Prompts for further study[edit]

This section is for prompts that invite us to think about a passage more deeply or in a new way. These are not necessarily questions that beg for answers, but rather prompts along the lines of "Have you ever thought about ..." Prompts are most helpful when they are developed individually, thoughtfully, and with enough background information to clearly indicate a particular direction for further study or thought. • Chapter 24-25. Of all things the Savior could have had them add to their scriptures, He chooses the third and fourth chapters of Malachi. Though we are told in verse 1 that "he expounded them," we are hardly introduced to the way these two chapters were interpreted by Joseph Smith. Why would the Savior have quoted these two chapters, and what influence has this quotation had on the history of the Church?
  • 3 Ne. 26:3: This verse speaks of the elements melting together with fervent heat. Is this related to the state of the earth as a "sea of glass" spoken of in Revelation (see links below)?
  • 3 Ne. 26:3: Here it says that the Earth will be wrapped up like a scroll and the heavens and Earth should pass away. What is meant here by "pass away"?

Resources[edit]

This section is for listing links and print resources, including those that are also cited elsewhere on this page. A short comment about the particular strengths of a resource can be helpful. Click the link above and to the right to edit or add content to this heading. →

  • 3 Ne. 23:9, 13. Hel 14:25 gives the prophecy of Samuel that "many graves shall be opened, and shall yield up many of their dead; and many saints shall appear unto many."

Notes[edit]

Footnotes are not required but are encouraged for factual assertions that average readers cannot easily evaluate for themselves (such as the date of King Solomon’s death or the nuanced definition of a Greek word). In contrast, insights rarely benefit from footnoting, and the focus of this page should always remain on the scriptures themselves rather than what someone has said about them. Links are actively encouraged on all sections of this page, and links to authoritative sources (such as Strong's Bible Concordance or the Joseph Smith Papers) are preferable to footnotes.
