David succeeded Saul as king and ruled from 1009-969 BC.[1] David is the great national hero of Israel. During his reign Israel went from being threatened by its neighbors to reaching its greatest physical size. David captured Jerusalem and made it Israel's capital. He also transformed Israel from a rural, tribal kingdom into a cosmopolitan nation with a capital city, standing army, national bureaucracy, and systematic taxation. David's life and reign are also detailed in a much more personal way in 1 Samuel 16 - 1 Kings 2.
