What is the scope of this project? do you intend only to cover the scriptures, or is it open to examination of church history as well? I'd love to see a wiki that included, say, articles on each modern day Prophet and Apostle, commentary on news items, such as what is going on with that Southerton dude, and other things.

Scope[edit]

What is the scope of this project? do you intend only to cover the scriptures, or is it open to examination of church history as well? I'd love to see a wiki that included, say, articles on each modern day Prophet and Apostle, commentary on news items, such as what is going on with that Southerton dude, and other things.

Would the creators of this Wiki support additions like that, or send interested users to a different Wiki?

Hi 65.216.70.186,
This site is for commentary and discussion of the scriptures. I don't see the focus of this site being broadened.
At one point in time User:Mark started a wiki devoted to LDS doctrine. I don't think it is active at this time. I am not aware of any other wiki's devoted to lds topics but who knows what is out there now or what might be started soon. There are a bunch of blogs devoted to the topics you mention. Some links to these are listed on Site:LDS blogs.
PS If you feel comfortable doing it, I would suggest logging in to post comments in the future. Having a login name makes it easier to have a discussion. I can think of several reasons off-hand for logging in 1) it is not as easy to remember ip addresses as it is names 2) it is nicer saying "Hi Sue" then it is "Hi 65.216.70.86" 3) for some people their ip address keeps switching making it hard to figure out who is who 4) some people don't like having their ip address posted publicly, logging in prevents this (an ip address gives the actual internet address of your computer at the time of posting) 5) logging in allows you to personalize your experience at Feast upon the Word a bit 6) it allows other people to send you a private message (to your e-mail) without revealing your e-mail address to them 7) there's got to be some more reasons but none occur to me right now.

I have the Username Measure on Wikipedia, but don't want to register here unless I decide to commit myself to the wiki. Thank you for the responses.
Here's one Mormon wiki with a broader scope: www.mormonwiki.com. There are others listed on the Other LDS resources page. --RobertC 14:45, 30 Mar 2006 (UTC)

Wider Scope[edit]

For those who are interested in a greater scope, I invite you to look at Christianity Knowledge Base which is a non-denominational wiki and explicitly allows the contributions of LDS followers. --70.30.57.80, 29 Mar 2006

Thanks, I think this site looks interesting. I'll try to post some things there and follow the discussion/development. --RobertC 14:42, 30 Mar 2006 (UTC)
Thanks Robert, any input would be greatly appreciated.

Inclusion of Extra-canonical Scriptures[edit]

In the spirit of D&C 91, I'd like to include here commentary on lost scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. I'm happy to undertake this project, if the community agrees to include it. --TheEditrix 11 Apr 06

Personally, I like the idea. If it's too much of stretch to put on main commentary pages, you can always put it on a user subpage. After all, I've been writing about Taoist texts here.... --RobertC 23:16, 11 Apr 2006 (UTC)
Let's see how it goes. An easy way to begin is simply to start on a user subpage organizing it however you think is best. As RobertC notes, there is precendent for starting your own project related to the scriptures using a user subpage. Steve Jensen started doing his own thing around topical content using user subpages. Subpages are a great place to experiment with something new and see how it goes. If you want to invite others to edit your page, let them know that explicitly; otherwise they might assume they shouldn't. For more info about user subpages see the user subpage policies and help creating user subpages. --Matthew Faulconer 04:51, 12 Apr 2006 (UTC)

Main Page protection[edit]

Why exactly isn't the Main Page protected (yet)? --220.152.116.2302:56, 21 Oct 2006 (UTC)

I am glad to say that there hasn't been a need yet. The upside is that people can improve the page easily if needed. --Matthew Faulconer 04:01, 21 Oct 2006 (UTC)
But the Main Page is highly visible, so should at least be semiprotected, shouldn't it, after all, anyone can create an account, it will become even easier once this extension is installed, also consider LiquidThreads --Myrtonos @ 02:57, 10 December 2011 (CET)

Authority[edit]

A few questions that I would like to see addressed on the home page:

  • To what extent is this wiki/blog representing the church?
  • To what extent is the wiki commentary authoritative?
  • What is the purpose of this project, and who can contribute?

These issues are summed up nicely in a comment by m&m to Making the gospel truer than it really is:

...the importance of sticking first and foremost with the source, the scriptures themselves, and letting the Spirit be the One who teaches and is the light, not us. I think the same can apply in personal study as we forego making supplemental, scholarly stuff our primary focus, letting that be supplemental at most, and have more personal, pure, Spirit-led experiences with the scriptures themselves.

Hi John, I'll take these questions in order.

To what extent is this wiki/blog representing the church?

This site is not owned or sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The suggestion recently came up to put some sort of disclaimer to that affect. Feel free to suggest the wording.

To what extent is the wiki commentary authoritative?

This site is not owned or sponsored by the Church. We make no claim to be an authority for the Church

What is the purpose of this project, and who can contribute?

Here's the current text on the home page that addresses this question. If this is unclear, we are open to suggestions for improving it.

Feast upon the Word provides commentary on the Standard Works of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or in other words, exegesis of Mormon scripture. The Standard Works for the Church of Jesus Christ are: The Old Testament, The New Testament, The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine & Covenants and The Pearl of Great Price. This commentary is provided free to all. In turn, we ask that you freely contribute to this site following our policies.

Regarding your comments about not making scholarly stuff our primary focus and following the Spirit...I agree that we should be lead by the spirit in our scripture study. --Matthew Faulconer 09:29, 7 February 2007 (CET)
