From the context it is clear that Jesus is rebuking the disciples for their lack of faith. The other option, that his rebuke includes the man asking to cast the devil out of his son, seems inconsistent with the fact that Jesus immediately casts the devil out. One thing we can learn from this verse is the responsibility those who are asked to perform a miracle have. It is clear that it is not only the faith and righteousness of the father which is relevant here. It is because his disciples lack faith and are perverse (Greek: διαστρέφω - corrupt) that they cannot heal the child.
