After the people of Ammon saw the pain and suffering that Helaman and his people were going through, I believe they had compassion for them. Their desire to take up arms was somewhat of a righteous desire, but by so doing, they would be braking the oath that they made with God.

I believe that the reason that they were willing to allow their sons to go to war is that they had great faith that they would be spared. This goes to show how much faith that they truly had. They were willing to let their inexperienced sons fight for, and in behalf of them.
