Leave comments for Matthew here.

Hi Matthew.  Thanks for the encouraging words.  I have two questions for you.  The first, is whether you are related to Jim Faulconer, the BYU philosophy professor from whom I took 9 hours of classes in the 1970s.  The second has to do with editing.  When I create an edit and save it, it often doesn't show up if I close and open the Wiki.  It has been saved because if I open the edit box again, it is still there.  But if I set things to scroll through the entire chapter, it doesn't show.  Is that because the wiki is moderated and the edit must be approved before it shows. If I knew that to be the case, I would not be concerned.  But as things stand, I am always worried that my comments may not have been saved since they are not showing up. Larsenwv (Val Larsen)

Why not more content?
+
Matthew,
Hi, Matthew.
+
I really like the idea of this site, especially if it is moderated - as it appears to be. What I am wondering is why there is not more content. For example, your father's lesson notes that appear on the blog should be here at a minimum - don't you think? In any case, I will be using the site more, and I will encourage others to do so. --User:Rick

:Rick, since Matthew's out of town, let me reply in the meantime: Yes!
+
I ask if you were Jim's son before seeing the picture you posted.  After seeing the picture (but before seeing your reply) I had no doubt about the answer.  There is a clear family resemblance.

:Jim has, from time to time, posted his notes here on the wiki.  And, from time to time, others of us have added Jim's notes here.  The problem is, quite simply, that it takes work and time to add the content here.  Jim started doing his SS notes at the Time and Seasons blog before the wiki ever started, and I think it's easier for him to just type up his notes all on one page and post them to the blog (which, by the way, more users seem comfortable using...) rather than posting his questions (and comments) on various pages of the wiki.  He's said he's game for transferring his notes to the wiki, it's just that it takes time, which is something all of us seem to be a bit short on....
+
Val

:Anyway, welcome to the wiki.  If you're interested in transferring Jim's notes, or taking up any other project, we'd love some help.  --RobertC 18:50, 12 October 2007 (CEST)

:I admit that the Wiki is new and a little confusing. All the same, I would be willing to help transfer Jim's notes. How would I get started? --Rick 05:19, 13 October 2007 (CEST)
+
Matthew,

::Rick, looks like you've already figured out the wiki on your own, nice jobNevertheless, you can go to Philip 2:5 to see how I transferred Jim's note on that verse.
+
I think I figured out what the problem wasI wasn't entering anything into the comment field at the bottom of the edit.  I think the message posts to the main scroll when there is a comment but stays just in the subsection when no comment is entered.  I'm not sure why that should be, but it seems to be true.

::You might notice that I made some slight stylistic changes when I was removing the instructions on the pages you edited (typically we remove the instructions for each section once content is added), but these changes simply reflect my own idiosyncratic preferences, not any site-wide policy we've adopted or anything.

Hi Matthew, this is natefifield.  It's been pretty lonely here at Feast Upon the Word, seems most of the contributions have come from me the last few weeks. I was concerned about recent anonymous posting on James 5:1-5

Hey Rick, I'm just catching up after being away for a bit. Thanks for taking the time to post some stuff. Several people have given their permission to transfer stuff to the wiki, see this page: Site:Works to incorporate. Often to do it well, some changes have to be made to integrate the text--given the slightly different purpose of this site versus what the author was doing when they wrote it. I think carefully integrating text into the site is a great way to get to know a specific passage of scripture well--a nice sort of personal scripture study exercise. I wish I did more of it myself.
+
I didn't click on any links for fear they contain viruses or something like that. I tried deleting it, but was unable to do so. Just wanted to let you know.

Maybe someday someone who is writing a set of questions or text relevant to, e.g. several chapters at once, would be able to integrate their comments questions into the site and people could respond to them easily, but as of now, the blog is just much better at that. The wiki, in contrast is a better format for incorporating additional and future thoughts related to the same scripture into the same text. Adding a new thought into an existing text is harder than say responding to a post, but, in my view, that hard work is also more important in the long run. I see the wiki and outside resources like the blog as happily co-existing with the wiki stealing ideas (and sometimes text) from outside resources where appropriate, other times just adding links.
+
: Hi Natefifield. Just fixed James 5:1-5. Thanks for drawing it to my attention. Yes it was a good idea not to click on the links. Even if they aren't viruses they won't lead to anything of value.

Hi Matthew. I have something to contribute to the questions posed at Gen 3:21-24. Since my discussion involves the whole of Genesis 2:4-3:24, it would be more appropriate to place it in the discussion page. My thesis revolves around distinguishing between Genesis and later interpreters like Paul or Joseph Smith. I've done this sort of thing here before, and explain my methodology on my user page. However, in this case, what I have to say about Genesis 2-3 is potentially controversial, even if I affirm what Paul and Joseph said about this passage settles the matter. My question is what I should do about it? Should I go ahead and post to the discussion page? Should I post my thesis on my own site and simply leave a link with the appropriate warning? Or simply don't say anything on this site at all? Timothy A. Griffy 04:44, 2 May 2013 (CEST)

Is it possible to print the wiki commentary with the scriptures in context? I don't think the formatted material that I could see how to print from the wiki would be very useful. What do you think? Please tell me how you use the site. Thanks. --Rick 07:16, 14 October 2007 (CEST)

:Rick, I'm not sure if this is what you meant, but I noticed that if you go to print a commentary page, the scripture window does not seem to print the correct passage.  That is, if I go to print, for example, the D&C 3:11-15 page, the scripture window prints the D&C 3 heading and only the first line of v. 1, not vv. 11-15.  I hadn't noticed this problem before (I hardly ever print anything out from the wiki...), and I doubt Matthew is aware of it.  Let's see what he has to say when he gets back in town.

:When I do print things out, I usually print out the commentary for an entire section or chapter at a time (if you click on the chapter or section heading at the top of any commentary page, there will be an option at the bottom of the page that opens allowing you to view all scripture commentary on one page for that section or chapter), and then I print the scriptural text out separately from lds.org, or just use my own scriptures to read from.  --RobertC 13:50, 14 October 2007 (CEST)

::I don't think this is possible. If someone who knows more knows a way to set the iframe [the scripture window] at the correct bookmark on the printing page let me know. Sorry. Hello,

I just discovered this site today, and it sounds like a really great idea.  I tried to click on some links leading to BYU articles (Nephi's Outline), and I got an error page saying "invalid pointer".  Do you know what that's about? Thanks.

Jon

:Hey Jon, Glad you found the site. Probably the site hosting the BYU article on Nephi's outline changed something on their side since the link was posted. Which page is it (can you give me the link?) that has the link to Nephi's Outline which is causing problems? Thanks, --Matthew Faulconer 06:49, 30 May 2007 (CEST)

To tell you the truth, I know next to nothing about how to work in wiki. It took me a couple minutes to figure out how to reply to your message. Anyway, I do have to answer math questions still, but it says that once I confirm my email address (I think xxxxxxxxx is the one I'm using for this account, though xxxxxxxxxx is my personal address) then I won't have to answer math questions anymore. I just haven't taken the time to do that yet.

I was just messing around this evening seeing what I could find in the way of full text bible commentaries available on google books. I haven't looked in these books yet--i have no idea if they are any good. But I intend to look quickly to see if any of them have an easy answer to the recent question on Isa 1:11-15. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Caution in using these sources
+
:Jim F: The major problem with these commentaries--sometimes, though not always, a significant one--is that they are more than 100 years old. A lot of new thinking has gone into reading the Bible, and a lot of new sources have been discovered, so works this old should be used with some caution.
+
::Good point. Though it is too bad that people who have done work later haven't allowed those works to be published freely on the Internet -- meaning that we have to rely on things where the copyright has expired.

I just wanted to thank you very much for the commentary related to Alma 12. It was hugely helpful in bringing attention to some of the details, that are crucial but are often overlooked in lesson manuals. In my self study, I felt this chapter was very important to understand and I really appreciated the drilling down into the details of the likely meanings of the first and second commandment, how the first was given to Adam and Eve without their full awareness, and so that there would necessarily be a difference between the judgement towards breaking the first and second commandments (which have specific meanings according to this chapter.)

Questions or Comments for Matthew[edit]

Hi Matthew. Thanks for the encouraging words. I have two questions for you. The first, is whether you are related to Jim Faulconer, the BYU philosophy professor from whom I took 9 hours of classes in the 1970s. The second has to do with editing. Matthew,

I think I figured out what the problem was. I wasn't entering anything into the comment field at the bottom of the edit. I think the message posts to the main scroll when there is a comment but stays just in the subsection when no comment is entered. I'm not sure why that should be, but it seems to be true.

Hi Matthew. I have something to contribute to the questions posed at Gen 3:21-24. Since my discussion involves the whole of Genesis 2:4-3:24, it would be more appropriate to place it in the discussion page.
