Questions
* vv. 6-7: Jacob begins quoting Isaiah at Isa 49:22. The theme of Isa 49 is the redemption of Israel from captivity, and we understand the chapters from which Jacob reads (49-52) to be prophecies of the Messiah. Why does Jacob begin where he does rather than earlier? When the Lord says he will lift up his hand to the Gentiles (v. 6), what does he mean? What do you think is the significance of lifting up the hand? What does “set up my standard” mean? As it is used here, a standard is a flag. Of what might it be a symbol here? What does the Lord mean when he says he will set up his standard to the people? What service is it that the Gentiles will perform for Israel (v. 7)? What is the Lord promising the house of Israel?

* vv. 8-18: Compare what is in these verses to verses 6-7. Those verses say that the Lord will lift up his hand to the Gentiles and will set up a standard to them. They also say that the Gentiles will serve the house of Israel and will bow down to them in subservience, and they say that Israel will know that he is the Lord and won’t be ashamed of him. These verses say that Israel has been scattered but will be gathered and scattered again when Christ is killed, and that Israel will be persecuted but allowed to continue until it comes to know Christ when it will be restored to its inheritance. They also tell that the Gentiles who believe will be blessed and they tell of the Second Coming. How do these verses explain vv. 6-7?

Lexical notes
* Vs. 9: The question of whether a sixth-century BC reference to crucifixion is anachronistic is answered by reference to Deuteronomy 21:22-23, which describes hanging a man from a tree as a form of capital punishment. The reader is also referred to The History of Crucifixion, which describes crucifixion of Athenian pirates a century before this Book of Mormon record, as well as a nearly-contemporaneous mass crucifixion of Darius I's political opponents in 519 BC.

Getting started
Anyone can add or edit the commentary pages on this site. Here are some simple steps to get started.

# Read the help on posting to commentary pages.
# Find a section of scripture you are interested in (see below)
# Add and revise content by clicking the edit link
# Click "Save page" when you are done

The fact that other people can edit what you write means that you don't have to wait until you have something perfect before you add it. Start by adding something and see what happens.

If you aren't sure that the comment you have to make belongs on the commentary page, post it to the discussion page instead. If you have trouble editing a page look at Help:Editing. For any other help see the main help page.

Finally, if you haven't done so already, please create an account. Though we allow anonymous edits, by creating an account you help create a sense of community here. Further, when you log in, certain personalized features of this site will be available to you that are not available to anonymous users.
* The Pearl of Great Price.
Searching for scriptures
The fastest way to get to a scripture is by typing its reference in the search box. You can find the search box on the left of any page on this site below the navigation links. To use the search box to find a scripture commentary page you need to use the standard abbreviations used in the footnotes of the scriptures published by the Church. Also you must type the reference to a single verse rather than to a passage. For example, type:
* 1 Ne 16:28, but not 1 Nephi 16:28
* Mosiah 5:2, but not Mos 5:2
* Philip 2:5, but not Philipians 2:5
Take a look at the commentary page for that scripture. To get to there, follow one of the following links to the particular scripture of interest: The Old Testament, The New Testament, The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine & Covenants, The Pearl of Great Price. Once you are on the particular relevant verses for your scripture, look to see if there is a question there or commentary there that addresses your question. If you don't find what you are looking for, try looking next on the discussion page for those verses by clicking on the "discussion" tab at the top of the page.
