Verse 27 - Even as I am
What does it mean to be "even as Christ is"? This verse immediately follows a chiasmus which spans most of this chapter. That chiasmus emphasizes that we must follow God's commands and do his works. The fact that Jesus has just emphasized this point and ends telling us that we must be like him, suggests that the key characteristic we should emulate in following him is that like him we should be perfect in doing the works/will of the Father.
Achieving Zion
* Finding better ways to organize societies, politically, socially, and economically (why wait?).
* Belief work - replacing false beliefs with the truth as a means of personal growth (sanctification).
Sustainable Communities
* Forest gardening - growing your own Garden of Eden.
* Micro Economies - self-reliant neighbors exchanging goods and services.
* Local self-government
Freedom-Based Education
* Just as it is impossible to compel people to be truly good (Lucifer's plan), it is equally impossible to compel them to become truly educated. Our compulsory education laws and the compulsory nature of our educational institutions are self-defeating.
* Compulsion Kills Incentive and Freedom Enlivens It!
* What if your child went to a school that was a microcosm of the greater free society in which s/he was to be an eventual participant? That "school" would offer your child the same opportunities to get involved in the government of the school, just as you have the opportunity to get involved in the government of your community, state, and nation. Your child could participate in making, enforcing, and adjudicating laws on a school level, in preparation to wield those same responsibilities as an adult. What better way could there possibly be to prepare your child to be a good citizen of a free, self-governing society?
Verses 37 & 38 appear to be the center of a thematic chiasm that looks like this:
<pre>
30a - God leads his people to the promised land
31 - God's word
30b - His people harden their hearts and revile against His prophet
35 - God favors/loves the righteous
35 - Lord cleanses His people of iniquity
36 - The Lord and the Earth
37 - The Lord, the Righteous and the Wicked
38 - The Lord, the Righteous and the Wicked
39 - The Lord and the Earth
40 - God favors/loves the righteous
41 - Lord cleanses His people of iniquity
42a - His people harden their hearts and revile against His prophet
42b - God leads his people to the promised land
45+ - God's word
</pre>
Nephi is trying here to get Laman to see the truth, that the inhabitants of Jerusalem had become wicked and that the Lord was leading Lehi's family away because they were righteous. He emphasizes the ideas in 37 and 38 to try to persuade Laman that this is God's regular mode of operation - to lead out the righteous and then destroy the wicked. It will be interesting to see if this pattern is repeated in modern Israel's "Jerusalem" today.
Chapter 17: Covenantal significance
Chennattu (p. 69, see below) suggests that John 13-17 follows a the structural outline of Josh 24:1-24. The outline is as follows:

:1. Josh and the people gathered in the presence of God at Shechem (Josh 24:1)
::1'. Jesus and the disciples gathered together for the farewell meal (John 13:1-38)
:2. The proclamation of God's election and guidance of the people (Josh 24:2-13):
::2'. The promise of God's indwelling presence and guidance (John 14:1-31)
:3. A call to obedience and a call to decision (Josh 24:14-15)
::3'. A call to abide and keep the commandments (John 15:1-17)
:4. Josh's warning of the consequences of the decision (Josh 24:16-20)
::4'. Jesus' warning of the consequences of discipleship (John 15:18-16:24)
:5. The people's response of total allegiance to Yahweh (Josh 24:21-24)
::5'. The disciples' profession of faith (John 16:25-33)
:6. A ceremony sealing the covenant (Josh 24:25-28)
::6'. A prayer consecrating the covenant community of the disciples (John 17:1-26)

If John 17 is read as a prayer that consecrates or seals the new covenant Jesus is offering the discipleship community (there also seem to be parallels with Ex 24:8), then several motifs in the chapter take on covenantal significance. In particular, this reading would suggest:

* Verses 1-5 are a description of the Father-Son community which the disciples are being invited to become a part of.
* Verses 6-16 describes the manifestation of God's name to the disciples (cf. Ex 3:13-15; Ex 16:10; Ps 22:22; Isa 42:8; Isa 52:6; Jer 16:21).
* Verses 17-19 consecrates or sets apart the disciples for a sacred duty or service. This parallels Old Testament consecration of priests (Ex 28:41, prophets (Jer 1:5, Sirach 45:4; 49:7; 2 Macc 1:25), and sacrifices (Ex 13:2; Deut 15:19; Heb 10:10).
* Verses 20-26 describes the glory that is made manifest in Jesus and is promised to the community, thus establishing God's presence in the midst of the community (cf. Ex 29:45; Ex 40:34-35; Num 11:20; Deut 7:21; Deut 23:14; Isa 35:2; Isa 40:5; Isa 42:8; Isa 66:18).

Chapter 17: Divine Relationships
Concept
Letting the text speak for itself, we see that at least 7 elements of the relationship between the Father and the Son are repeated in the relationship between the Son and the Apostles. Two of the seven are also specifically applied to converts.
The Evidence
7 Elements of the Divine Relationship:
* The Son glorifies the Father (by doing his work) - John 17:1, John 17:4.
* The Father gave his "words" (ie.truth) to the Son. John 17:8
* The Son is not "of the world". John 17:16
* The Father sent the Son into the world. John 17:3, John 17:18.
* The Son sanctified himself thru the truth (Father's word). John 17:19
* The Father and the Son are one. John 17:21
* The Son receives glory of the Father. John 17:1, John 17:5, John 17:22, John 17:24

Same 7 Elements Repeated Between the Son and the Apostles:
* The Apostles bring glory to the Son. John 17:10
* The Son gives the Father's words (truth) to the Apostles. John 17:6, John 17:8, John 17:14
* The Apostles are not "of the world". John 17:16
* The Son sends the Apostles into the world. John 17:18
* The Apostles can be sanctified through truth (Father's word). John 17:17, John 17:19
* The Apostles can be one as the Father and Son are one. John 17:11, John 17:21
* The Apostles receive glory of the Son. John 17:22

The Son Applies Two of the 7 Elements to Converts:
* Converts can be one as the Father and Son. John 17:21-23
* Converts receive glory of the Son. John 17:22

The theme introduced here of the LORD using his "hand" to purge the wicked from among His people is repeated several times throughout Isaiah: <br>
Isa 5:25, Isa 9:12,17,21, Isa 10:4, Isa 40:2, Isa 51:17 <br>
Together these can be summarized thus: "In His anger against His people, the LORD stretches forth His hand against them and smites them (many die)". <br>

Also, the hand of the LORD whacks other groups: <br>
Isa 14:26, Isa 23:11 - all nations; <br>
Isa 19:16, Isa 31:3 - Egypt (and all who rely on them); <br>
* Verses 21-23 - A Political Apostacy<br>
Judges, princes, and their counsellers are POLITICAL officers and in these verses the LORD makes it clear they are rebellious and more interested in gifts and bribes than in establishing justice and judgment for the politically powerless widows and orphans [sound familiar?]. The parallelism in 22-23a suggests "princes" = "silver that has become dross". This theme is expanded in Isa 3:1-7, and Isa 3:12-15.
The dross (corrupt princes) is to be swept away by "the hand of the LORD".

* Verses 26-27 - A Political Restoration<br>
Verse 29
* The gardens that ye have chosen. The oaks and the gardens here seem to refer to pagan open-air places of worship where fertility rites were performed. The word chosen is typically used to choose between to things. If Isaiah had the same background understanding as Nephi (in 1 Ne 11:22–23 Nephi seems to know, independently of the angel's explanation, that the tree in Lehi's dream symbolized the love of God), then there would be an implicit contrast here between the trees of the idols vs. the tree of life per Lehi's dream. (Cf. Isa 40:20.)

Exegesis
Verse 26
The LORD is going to bring about a political restoration after a political apostacy.
This conclusion is supported by this verse and its corresponding verse (23) in the chiasm of which this verse is a part.
Verse 23 explains that their dross-like princes (political leaders) are rebellious and clearly in it for the money and have no interest in establishing justice for the downtrodden (fatherless & widows). Verse 25 tells us that the LORD is going to completely purge his people of this dross. Then in this verse He promises to restore their judge-based free government "as at the first" -- a political restoration. Clearly this cannot refer to ancient times as it never happened during or after Isaiah's time.
Isa 3 supports this conclusion that there will be a political apostacy among the LORD's people, and that the LORD will end it. See specifically verses 1-5 and 12-15.

Verse 28
Close examination of Isaiah's use of the terms in this verse suggest that the "transgressors" and "sinners" who are to be destroyed together include the LORD's people, Israel.

Transgressors among the LORD's people:
:* Isa 48:1,8 - House of Jacob was called a transgressor from the womb.
:* Isa 50:1 - For Israel's transgressions is her "mother" put away.
:* Isa 53:8 - "my people" were mentioned as transgressing.
:* Isa 58:1 - ditto

"Sinners" includes Babylonians and residents of Zion:
:* Isa 13:1,9,19 - Babylonian sinners to be destroyed out of the land in the day of the LORD.
:* Isa 33:14 - "The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites."

One can only forsake someone with whom they have once had a relationship.<br>
Other verses that support the idea that forsaking the LORD has serious consequences:
:* Isa 1:4 - "they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger..."
:* Isa 65:11-12 - those who forsake the LORD ("forget [his] holy mountain") are slaughtered.

Verse 29
Among other uses, oaks and other trees are mentioned as a place where idolatrous acts are performed, and, are used to make idols. Isa 40:20; Isa 44:14; [Isa 57:5]]; Isa 66:17

Gardens are twice mentioned elsewhere in Isaiah as locations for idolatrous sacrifice.
Isa 65:3; Isa 66:17.

Of further interest is the fact that this verse and the next are both structured as synonymous parallelisms. In which case the author is using a literary device to link the ideas of oaks and gardens.

So it appears, that this verse is saying that those who either manufacture or otherwise trust in idols will be ashamed. This conclusion is supported by these additional three verses: Isa 42:17, Isa 44:9-11, and Isa 45:16.
Judges, princes, and their counsellers are POLITICAL officers and in these verses the LORD makes it clear they are rebellious and more interested in gifts and bribes than in establishing justice and judgment [due process?] for the politically powerless widows and orphans. The parallelism in 22-23a suggests "princes" = "silver that has become dross". This theme is expanded in Isa 3:1-7, and Isa 3:12-15.

Isa 25:10-11 - Moab; <br>
Isa 26:10-11 - the wicked; <br>

Verse 29
Oaks, and other trees, are mentioned as either a place where idolatrous acts are performed, or, are used to make idols. Isa 40:20; Isa 44:14; Isa 57:5; Isa 66:17

Questions
* Entire Chapter: Doesn't the fact that Isaiah introduces so many themes here that are reworked throughout the entire book suggest that Chapter 1 is a preface and not a stand-alone work? For example, the two-pronged results promised in verses 19-20 are played out in virtually every chapter.
* Verse 1: Should the possibility that this vision refers specifically to the ancient kingdom of Judah change how we approach this chapter? Should it change how we approach the entire book of Isaiah?
* Verse 1 - What is the nature of the rebellion of the LORD's children?

Lexical notes
Verse 1
* "vision"

The English word vision as chosen by the KJV translators is particularly apt. The Hebrew word (from the Masoretic OT Hebrew text) is חָזן "chäzôn" which literally means a "sight", "dream", "revelation", or "oracle". The Greek word (from the Septuagint OT) '΄ορασις "hórasis" also carries the same meaning. Both the Hebrew and Greek Old Testaments are in agreement that Isaiah was having a revelatory experience via sight, dream, or vision. It also underscores the translation acumen of the KJV translators.

Exegesis
Verse 1
* This chapter is generally considered a superscription for the entire book of Isaiah. As such, there is a question as to whether the vision in this verse refers only to this chapter or to the book as a whole.
** The argument for understanding this as a reference to only this chapter relies on the self-contained nature of this chapter as a whole prophecy and the absence of this term in describing entire prophetic books elsewhere. The exception is Obad 1:1, which is similarly introduced, but which is only a chapter long. Elsewhere, this term introduces specific visions Hab 1:1), without seemingly referring to the entire book.
** The argument for understanding this as a reference to only this chapter relies on the chronological information listed here, which seems to cover all of Isaiah's ministry and, therefore, possibly refers to the entire book of Isaiah (or, at least, chapter 1-39). Although the exact dates of the reigns of these kings remains debated, it is clear that this verse places Isaiah in the latter half of the 8th century BCE.
* The reason why this argument is important is because, with Isaiah, there is always the problem of scope. In this verse, Isaiah notes that this vision is regarding Judah (meaning the southern kingdom of Judah) and its capital, Jerusalem. If this verse is understood as referring to the entire book of Isaiah, arguments that he is prophesying regarding the whole House of Israel (especially those who come from the northern kingdom of Israel) may be harder to make. That said, it still would not be impossible to make such an argument.

Verse 4
The idea of the LORD's people provoking His anger by forsaking Him, as introduced here, is repeated again in verse 28 where it says, "they that forsake the Lord shall be consumed." This concept is repeated again with greater detail at the end of the book of Isaiah in Isa 65:11-12:
: 11: "But ye are they that forsake the LORD,
:: that forget my holy mountain....
: 12: Therefore will I number you to the sword,
:: and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter:
:: because when I called, ye did not answer;
:: when I spake, ye did not hear;
:: but did evil before mine eyes,
:: and did choose that wherein I delighted not.
The next two verses (13-14) then juxtapose those that forsake the LORD with the LORD's servants.
This verse is at the tail end of two chiastic sections of Christ's discourse. His question and answer summarize both sections which comprise verses 10-15 and 21-27. The short answer, after pondering these verses, is likely to be, "Christ wants us to do what he does, that is, the works/will of the Father".<br>
* vs. 27: What does Jesus mean when he tells us to emulate his manner? Is he saying something more than to follow the example of his behavior? Is he telling us to become the kind of being that he is? Did he have a style that we should be trying to implement in our own lives? Did he have a personality type that we should be striving for?
Verse 27 - Even as I am
This verse is at the tail end of two chiastic sections of Christ's discourse. His question and answer summarize both sections which comprise verses 10-15 and 21-27. The short answer, after pondering these verses, is likely to be, "Christ wants us to do what he does, that is, the works/will of the Father".<br>
This verse is the chiastic center of this chapter (see notes for chapter 27). <br>
Typically Christ is the subject of the center verses of a chiasms in the scriptures. However, Christ is the one giving this discourse, so he deferentially gives the central position to His Father. <br>
* It is interesting to see that the disciples were gathered together in mighty prayer and fasting. It appears as though they were beginning to catch on to the fact that disputations are bad and that unity and prayer are good. Christ mentions several times previously about how there were dissentions among them about how to do things and He told them that contentions were of the devil. I think this teaches a good lesson for marriage or other sorts of relationships--that we should unite in prayer and fasting rather than allow disputations seperate us.

* Fascinating that the disciples had such limited awareness that when Christ asks, "What will ye that I shall give unto you?" (ie. What do you desire that I should give you?), instead of saying, "Give us power to rend mountains," or "Give us Eternal Life," they ask, "What do you want us to call your church?". ===Verse 7: Sake===
Christ tells us to call on the Father in his name so that he will bless the church for Christ sake. Christ's role here is as mediator between us and the Father. See Heb 9:14-15. In this reading, sake means something like "because of" or "on account of"--see Webster's 2nd definition in the lexical notes above. It is because of or as a result of the atonement that the Father blesses us.

Verse 8
This verse answers the question, "What should the name of Christ's church be?" which seems to be an important question shown by the manner in which the Savior spoke to His disciples. Like the Church, each of us should take upon ourselves the name of Christ personally.

Verses 10-11
Here Christ seems to be saying that there are three levels/types of works that can be performed in His church.
# Works of the Father
# Works of men, and
# Works of the devil.
Note that the last two will get you "hewn down and cast into the fire".<br>

Talk about blowing an opportunity!<br>
* Also, it's interesting how, in answer to their question of what to call the church, Christ launches in to a lengthy and (see chiastically organized discourse which extends way beyond the scope of their question. <br>
Verse 10
Here the Lord promises those he is speaking to that have been ordained to this ministry that if they strip themselves of jealousies and fears and humble themselves, they will see the Lord and know that he is. This is then followed with the statement "not with the carnal neither natural mind, but with the spiritual." Though this statement could refer only to (a) seeing God, or only to (b) knowing that God is, it makes sense to assume it applies to both. As it applies to seeing God (a), this is a promise to see God with spiritual eyes. This is similar to what Moses says about seeing God in Moses 1:11 and what the Lord says about it in D&C 67:11-13. (See related links for more on seeing God with spiritual eyes.) If this statement applies to the knowledge that the Lord is (b), this is a promise to know with the spiritual mind that God is. This is similar to what Paul says in 1 Cor 2:14.
(See related links for more on seeing God with spiritual eyes.) If this statement applies to the knowledge that the Lord is (b), this is a promise to know with the spiritual mind that God is. This is similar to what Paul says in 1 Cor 2:14.

Jesse:

My firm belief is that any time we feel a strong negative emotion (anger, hatred, fear, etc.) it is because we are operating under a faulty assumption of some kind. Frequently they are assumptions made by us when we were children under great emotional stress. Most often our false assumptions are about God, our parents, or ourselves. My wife and I learned from our experience that rarely is the issue really about the person that triggered our negative response.

A great example of the power that false assumptions can have over us comes from an experience my wife had when our first two children were very young. I was looking for work and was at home making phone calls. I went into our bedroom and was very surprised to find my wife literally shaking under the covers with fear with the pillow over her head.

Come to find out she was terrified of thunder and there was a first class thunderstorm going on outside. We had recently learned about working through strong emotions and so used the techniques to discover that she had picked up this fear from watching the movie, Ben Hur, as a child. She had concluded from one stormy scene that thunder was indicative of God’s displeasure.

After discovering the truth, the change in my wife was drastic and immediate. The next day, she was sitting on the porch with our children counting the distance between the flashes of lightning and the claps of thunder. Her fear was completely gone.

We discovered that the best time to ponder the root causes of our strong negative emotions is while we’re experiencing them. We trained ourselves to grab a piece of paper when either one of us got riled up. As you can imagine, this is pretty difficult habit to start, but it is certainly worth the effort.
