Woops, this computer remembered me using my old Rcouch account (which I'd like to delete) on that last comment....

A related programming question: How hard would it be to prompt non-logged in users to either log-in or create an account when they submit edits? I think they should still be given the chance to just use their IP address without an account, but it's a good excuse to prompt them to create an account (and a good reminder for those of us with an account to login if we forgot!). --RobertC 19:26, 13 Aug 2005 (CEST)
Robert, I notice Cheryl's new post is extremely long in the entry window yet your other posts just give an excerpt & an invitation to "read more." I write pretty short posts, so this hasn't cropped up as an issue yet. I prefer the excerpt version & wonder if you can fix that with Cheryl's Less.9 post & tell me how to do it if per adventure I have a longer-than-normal-for-me post. ==Scripture journal==

On Matthewfaulconer's page, he lists "less introspective" as one of the goals of this site that differentiates it from other blog sites. I personally would like to hear other people's introspective thoughts, esp. in regard to the questions on the commentary page. I think allowing a place for such ruminations on this site will help create a sense of community as well as spark ideas that may eventually become an improvement on the main commentary pages.

However, I understand this may be beyond the scope of this site, at least as originally intended. This also adds 'noise' to the recent changes page, which is probably followed by many users. So if a personal scripture journal is not appropriate for this site, please let me know. Because these personal reflections don't directly further the main goal and scope of this site (they're too introspective), I'm putting links on the discussion page, not the commentary page.

:I like the idea of people posting some personal reflections on the scriptures that may or may not work well (and not having to worry about whether it does) on their own personal pages. The issue you bring up about noise on the recent changes page is legitimate. I think it wouldn't be too hard to add another switch on this page so that you could hide edits to user pages. I'll add that to the list of enhancements.--Matthew Faulconer 16:08, 16 Aug 2005 (CEST)
RE: CR Citations
Thanks for the feedback regarding the "Related Links" to GC talks. I had previously talked to Matthew about adding links as a project, and he gave me the thumbs up. I can already see it's going to keep me busy for the next few months. Last night I spent about an hour, and didn't get very far. I am not adding every scripture referenced in the talk, only those that are expanded to some degree in the text, which means that I have to read the talks pretty carefully. I also had to go back and edit my entries after I determined I was formatting the citation incorrectly. (You know, correct use of italics, abbr., etc...) BTW, do you know what ff. means--footnotes?? --John 03:10, 10 February 2007 (CET)
:It actually looks OK on my computer, but I installed some Greek fonts a while ago (through Crosswalk's site I think it was). I actually copied the Greek letters only because I wasn't sure how to transliterate this. Generally, I think it's better to just transliterate here to avoid problems and potential problems like this (seems there will always be browsers that struggle with whatever font we choose...), so I went ahead and guessed (though I tried to double check it with the Blue Letter Bible site!). --RobertC 06:56, 11 July 2007 (CEST)
I've knew FATW just now (someone talk about this project at MormonWiki-EN).

There is a Portugese version to FATW project?

If there is not, who can create it? Whatever, we can create a subproject here, making a page like that:

1st option:
*Portuguese version
**Portuguese version/Velho Testamento (Old Test.)
**Portuguese version/Velho Testamento (New Test.)
**Portuguese version/Doutrina e Convênios (D&C)
**Portuguese version/Pérola de Grande Valor (PGP)

2nd option:

The expression "Portuguese version" may be changed for only "pt", subpage of the english page:
*The Old Testament/pt
*The New Testament/pt
*The Book of Mormon /pt
*Doctrine & Covenants/pt
*Pearl of Great Price/pt

3th option:

(creating a NAMESPACE: <tt>Portuguese:</tt>), doing:

*Portugese:Página inicial (Main page)
*Portuguese:Velho Testamento
*Portuguese:Novo Testamento
*etc.
Why not more content?
Hi, Matthew.
I really like the idea of this site, especially if it is moderated - as it appears to be. What I am wondering is why there is not more content. For example, your father's lesson notes that appear on the blog should be here at a minimum - don't you think? In any case, I will be using the site more, and I will encourage others to do so. --User:Rick

:Rick, since Matthew's out of town, let me reply in the meantime: Yes!

:Jim has, from time to time, posted his notes here on the wiki. And, from time to time, others of us have added Jim's notes here. The problem is, quite simply, that it takes work and time to add the content here. Jim started doing his SS notes at the Time and Seasons blog before the wiki ever started, and I think it's easier for him to just type up his notes all on one page and post them to the blog (which, by the way, more users seem comfortable using...) rather than posting his questions (and comments) on various pages of the wiki. He's said he's game for transferring his notes to the wiki, it's just that it takes time, which is something all of us seem to be a bit short on....

:Anyway, welcome to the wiki. If you're interested in transferring Jim's notes, or taking up any other project, we'd love some help. --RobertC 18:50, 12 October 2007 (CEST)

:I admit that the Wiki is new and a little confusing. All the same, I would be willing to help transfer Jim's notes. How would I get started? --Rick 05:19, 13 October 2007 (CEST)

::Rick, looks like you've already figured out the wiki on your own, nice job. Nevertheless, you can go to Philip 2:5 to see how I transferred Jim's note on that verse.

::You might notice that I made some slight stylistic changes when I was removing the instructions on the pages you edited (typically we remove the instructions for each section once content is added), but these changes simply reflect my own idiosyncratic preferences, not any site-wide policy we've adopted or anything.

::Thanks for the work you've already done on D&C 3, and thanks in advance for the contributions you make in the future! --RobertC 22:33, 13 October 2007 (CEST)

Hey Rick, I'm just catching up after being away for a bit. Thanks for taking the time to post some stuff. Several people have given their permission to transfer stuff to the wiki, see this page: Site:Works to incorporate. Often to do it well, some changes have to be made to integrate the text--given the slightly different purpose of this site versus what the author was doing when they wrote it. I think carefully integrating text into the site is a great way to get to know a specific passage of scripture well--a nice sort of personal scripture study exercise. I wish I did more of it myself.

Maybe someday someone who is writing a set of questions or text relevant to, e.g. several chapters at once, would be able to integrate their comments questions into the site and people could respond to them easily, but as of now, the blog is just much better at that. The wiki, in contrast is a better format for incorporating additional and future thoughts related to the same scripture into the same text. Adding a new thought into an existing text is harder than say responding to a post, but, in my view, that hard work is also more important in the long run. I see the wiki and outside resources like the blog as happily co-existing with the wiki stealing ideas (and sometimes text) from outside resources where appropriate, other times just adding links.

Not sure if that answers you questions. Let me know if not.
--Matthew Faulconer 06:52, 19 October 2007 (CEST)
Printing glitch
Is it possible to print the wiki commentary with the scriptures in context? I don't think the formatted material that I could see how to print from the wiki would be very useful. What do you think? Please tell me how you use the site. Thanks. --Rick 07:16, 14 October 2007 (CEST)

:Rick, I'm not sure if this is what you meant, but I noticed that if you go to print a commentary page, the scripture window does not seem to print the correct passage. That is, if I go to print, for example, the D&C 3:11-15 page, the scripture window prints the D&C 3 heading and only the first line of v. 1, not vv. 11-15. I hadn't noticed this problem before (I hardly ever print anything out from the wiki...), and I doubt Matthew is aware of it. Let's see what he has to say when he gets back in town.

:When I do print things out, I usually print out the commentary for an entire section or chapter at a time (if you click on the chapter or section heading at the top of any commentary page, there will be an option at the bottom of the page that opens allowing you to view all scripture commentary on one page for that section or chapter), and then I print the scriptural text out separately from lds.org, or just use my own scriptures to read from. --RobertC 13:50, 14 October 2007 (CEST)

::I don't think this is possible. If someone who knows more knows a way to set the iframe [the scripture window] at the correct bookmark on the printing page let me know. Sorry. ===Caution in using these sources===
:Jim F: The major problem with these commentaries--sometimes, though not always, a significant one--is that they are more than 100 years old. A lot of new thinking has gone into reading the Bible, and a lot of new sources have been discovered, so works this old should be used with some caution.
::Good point. Though it is too bad that people who have done work later haven't allowed those works to be published freely on the Internet -- meaning that we have to rely on things where the copyright has expired.
::On a separate but related note, I think I should delete this section pretty soon because in fact these sources I foudn weren't helpful--at least not when researching the thing I was looking for. --Matthew Faulconer 07:42, 21 May 2008 (CEST)

I just took a quick gander to see if Keil and Delitzsch is on Google-Book, and I found at least some of the volumes there available for full view. It might be worth fishing around a bit to find them all and to set up links. I also checked for Adam Clarke's commentary, and it looks like it might be available for full view as well. If any more-than-100-year-old commentary is worth keeping on hand, it is probably these two: both are detailed examinations of the scriptures, verse-by-verse. Clarke's commentary provides a good overview of how liberal Christians were reading the Bible in Joseph Smith's day, and Keil and Delitzsch is still widely read and used (a German product). --Joe Spencer 16:50, 21 May 2008 (CEST)

I can already see it's going to keep me busy for the next few months. Last night I spent about an hour, and didn't get very far. I am not adding every scripture referenced in the talk, only those that are expanded to some degree in the text, which means that I have to read the talks pretty carefully.
Portuguese version
Hi RobertC,

I'm a brasilian user to http://en.mormonwiki.com and http://pt.mormonwiki.com projects.

**Portuguese version/Livro de Mórmon (BoM)
**Portuguese version/Doutrina e Convênios (D&C)
**Portuguese version/Pérola de Grande Valor (PGP)

2nd option:

The expression "Portuguese version" may be changed for only "pt", subpage of the english page:
*The Old Testament/pt
*The New Testament/pt
*The Book of Mormon /pt
*Doctrine & Covenants/pt
*Pearl of Great Price/pt

3th option:

(creating a NAMESPACE: <tt>Portuguese:</tt>), doing:

*Portugese:Página inicial (Main page)
*Portuguese:Velho Testamento
*Portuguese:Novo Testamento
*etc.

What do you think?

(excuse me for my bad English)

Att,

17:48, 8 December 2008 (CET)

:Ok,
:It's so much more easy for me to know you send me a message if you respond in my talk page... (I'm moving your respond text to there place).
:If the problem is only now how to do it, I can help, but if the problem is host it, I can't. :(
:Maybe I will create a sub-project at MormonWiki, or maybe something at Wikia (Wikia has so many rules about what is legal to put in that, I'm afraid I can't do it there).
:One more thing. I can't confirm my e-mail. I ask for that at Special:Confirmemail but I did not receved a e-mail to do it. If you can, help me in this too.
I also had to go back and edit my entries after I determined I was formatting the citation incorrectly. (You know, correct use of italics, abbr., etc...) Hey Robert, Is the Greek in the lexical notes on 2 Thes 2:1-5 messed up for you? I'm seeing block squares. Do you know how to fix it (I don't)? --Matthew Faulconer 05:53, 11 July 2007 (CEST)
Hi RobertC,

I'm a brasilian user to http://en.mormonwiki.com and http://pt.mormonwiki.com projects.

*Doctrine & Covenants/pt
*Pearl of Great Price/pt

3th option:

(creating a NAMESPACE: <tt>Portuguese:</tt>), doing:

*Portugese:Página inicial (Main page)
*Portuguese:Velho Testamento
*Portuguese:Novo Testamento

Woops, this computer remembered me using my old Rcouch account (which I'd like to delete) on that last comment....

A related programming question: How hard would it be to prompt non-logged in users to either log-in or create an account when they submit edits? I think they should still be given the chance to just use their IP address without an account, but it's a good excuse to prompt them to create an account (and a good reminder for those of us with an account to login if we forgot!). --RobertC 19:26, 13 Aug 2005 (CEST)
It is a great idea. I don't think it is very easy, but maybe one day we will have the resources to do it. In the meantime I'll add it to the list of suggested enhancements. --Matthew Faulconer 07:12, 14 Aug 2005 (CEST)
Thanks--Nanette 02:01, 26 February 2007 (CET)

:Thanks for pointing this out, I got it fixed. There's a little icon at the top of the Wordpress.com editor that will insert a "more" break. I think the icon has a little box above a separated larger box, or something. --RobertC 03:41, 26 February 2007 (CET)
Scripture journal
