* When considering the story of the ten lepers it is interesting to see how this compares to the Atonement. Jesus knew even before he cleansed the lepers that only one of the ten would return to give thanks to Him, yet He healed each one of them still. In a similar manner, Jesus knows how many of our Father's sons and daughters will fully accept His Atonement, yet He suffered for each one of us still. Only One possessing true Charity such as Himself would be willing to do such a thing.
* Elder Dallin H. Oaks said this about vs. 24-25: "The law of God can reward a righteous desire because an omniscient God can discern it. As revealed through the prophet of this dispensation, God 'is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.' (D&C 33:1.) If a person refrains from a particular act because he is genuinely unable to perform it, but truly would if he could, our Heavenly Father will know this and will reward that person accordingly." (From "The Desires of our Hearts," ''Ensign'' June 1986).
In verse 1 Alma tells us that some have gone astray by twisting and distorting the scriptures in relation to the restoration. Though the scriptures are meant for our good, we see here that if we distort them, they can lead us astray.
* vs. 19 - It's interesting to note that during times of righteous living, the Nephites appointed prophets to be the commanders of their armies. This is not the only place in the scriptures where something like this is mentioned. In Alma 2:16 it talks about how Alma the younger led the army of the Nephites during battle. Also, in Alma 43:23 it mentions that Captain Moroni (although he wasn't the prophet) caused his men to go and ask Alma the younger (the prophet) to inquire of the Lord as to how the Nephites should best defend themselves. Even in times of wickedness, the Nephite armies appointed Mormon to be their leader (see Mormon 2:1). In modern times, this has occurred as well, such as when Joseph Smith was appointed to leadership in the Nauvoo Legion. Wouldn't it be nice if leaders of armies today were prophets or consulted with prophets for guidance?
*When verse 3 mentions that the New Jerusalem will come down out of Heaven, it is probably referring to the city of Enoch. In Moses 7:62-63, referring to the last days the Lord says to Enoch,

"...and righteousness and truth will I cause to sweep the earth as with a flood, to gather out mine elect from the four quarters of the earth, unto a place which I shall prepare, an Holy City, that my people may gird up their loins, and be looking forth for the time of my coming; for there shall be my tabernacle, and it shall be called Zion, a New Jerusalem.

"And the Lord said unto Enoch: Then shalt thou and all thy city meet them there, and we will receive them into our bosom, and they shall see us; and we will fall upon their necks, and they shall fall upon our necks, and we will kiss each other."

The New Jerusalem will be built in Jackson County, Missouri, and the city of Enoch will descend out of heaven to join it.
I wonder just what was intended by the phrase healing in His wings and also, grow up as calves in a stall.
The calves in the stall seems more obvious-implying that Christ will watch over us and that we will be protected from evil and struggle and disaster. As for the other phrase, I am not yet sure, just exactly what was meant.
*Mount Horeb is another name for Mount Sinai, which is where the Law of Moses was given by God to Moses for the House of Israel [http://scriptures.lds.org/gss/snmnt (see reference).]
*Verse 2 is saying, like calves in a stall we will be protected and fed (spiritually) and be safe.

*In these verses, God is telling us that we have a choice. We can fear God and be protected and safe, or we can be proud and wicked be tread down and burn.

*In the scriptures, the phrase "the great and dreadful day of the Lord" is frequently used. This phrase refers to the Lord's second coming. Great will be that day for those who have been faithful in following the Lord. But dreadful will be that day for those who have not kept the Lord's commandments, for they will be rewarded according to their actions.
*In his talk entitled, "The Salvation of Little Children," Elder Bruce R. McConkie asks and answers the question, "Are all little children saved automatically in the Celestial Kingdom?" His answer is as follows:

"To this question the answer is a thunderous yes, which echoes and re-echoes from one end of heaven to the other. Jesus taught it to his disciples. Mormon said it over and over again. Many of the prophets have spoken about it, and it is implicit in the whole plan of salvation. If it were not so the redemption would not be infinite in its application. And so, as we would expect, Joseph Smith’s Vision of the Celestial Kingdom contains this statement: 'And I also beheld that all children who die before they arrive at the years of accountability are saved in the celestial kingdom of heaven.' (D&C 137:10)"

He also asks and answers the question, "Will children be married and live in the family unit?" His answer to this question is as follows:

"Certainly. There can be no question about this. If they gain salvation, which is eternal life, which is exaltation, it means that they are married and live in the family unit. President Joseph Fielding Smith has so stated in plain words, and it is something that must necessarily be so. (See Doctrines of Salvation, 2:49–57.)"
*What is the "type" of the New Jerusalem that is referred to in verse 6? Is it the old city of Jerusalem?...the city of Enoch?
*In verse 8 it states that the house of Joseph shall no more be confounded when built upon the New Jerusalem. What does this mean? Are they saying that they will receive the gospel and never have it taken from them again?
*In verse 9 what does it mean when it says there shall be a new heaven and a new earth and that all things will have become new?
== Questions ==
* What is the "better world" mentioned in verse 4?
*vs. 2 - What does it mean when it says that Ether "could not be restrained" from going and preaching the Gospel to the people? Was he physically compelled? In Alma 43:1 it mentions Alma the younger having a similar experience: "And Alma, also, himself, could not rest, and he also went forth." Did these men both just have such strong convictions of the Gospel that they couldn't bear to not be preaching it? Do the prophets today experience the same thing?

== Exegesis ==
*vs. 4 - There are a couple of things in verse 4 that stick out to me. First, the mention of how our belief in God will allow us to not only hope that our eternal future will bring good things, but we can hope with a surety, or in other words...KNOW that this will be the case! Hope, combined with true faith, eventually leads us to a spiritual ''knowledge'' of things that are not seen or have not yet come to pass.

Second, I like the description of how hope and faith anchor our souls to the Gospel. When a ship is anchored, it may start to drift slightly away from where it is centered, but the anchor keeps it from drifting too far. Likewise, when our lives are centered on the Gospel of Jesus Christ, He becomes our Anchor. Tempations may continue to beset us, but our faith and hope in the Savior, coupled with His redeeming power, keeps us from drifting too far away from Him.
== Questions ==
* "Moroni's Promise" in verses 3-5 was originally given by Moroni to the Lamanites (see verse 1). Latter-day prophets and apostles have since extended this promise to all who read the Book of Mormon (see external links). Why did Moroni specifically direct this promise to the Lamanites?
* Moroni's promise involves us reading and praying and then waiting for a manifestation of an answer. Looking at it this way, gaining a testimony could be considered sign seeking. How is seeking a manifestation of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon different from seeking a sign?

== Lexical notes ==
* ''Click the edit link above and to the right to add lexical notes''

== Exegesis ==
* In response to the question asked above, I think that there is definitely a difference between asking the Lord for confirmation of truth and asking the Lord for a sign. In a talk given by Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the quorum of the twelve apostles, he quotes President George Q. Cannon, former member of the First Presidency, as saying,

"It has been a matter of remark among those who have had experience in this Church that where men have been brought into the Church by such manifestations, it has required a constant succession of them to keep them in the Church; their faith has had to be constantly strengthened by witnessing some such manifestations; but where they have been convinced by the outpouring of the spirit of God, … they have been more likely to stand, more likely to endure persecution and trial than those who have been convinced through some supernatural manifestation,” with "manifestations" referring to signs and wonders ("Miracles," ''Ensign'', June 2001, 6).

This quote, and others like it, seems to imply that there are physical, supernatural type of signs as well as spiritually confirming signs. The former is a sign that we witness with our physical senses, and the latter is a sign that we witness more so with our hearts. Physical signs will last for but a moment and can be easily distorted over time by Satan. Spiritual "signs" however, leave a lasting impression upon us and cannot be duplicated by Satan or his servants. Only by seeking these spiritual "signs" can a person truly become converted to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

* Moroni's promise, originally given to the Lamanites, is frequently extended by today's prophets and apostles to all. See for example Elder Eyring's talk in General Conference May 2004 "[http://library.lds.org/nxt/gateway.dll/Magazines/Ensign/2004.htm/ensign%20may%202004.htm/in%20the%20strength%20of%20the%20lord.htm?f=templates$fn=default.htm$3.0 In the Strength of the Lord]."
*In his talk entitled, "A More Excellent Hope" (''Ensign'', Feb. 1997, 60), Elder Russell M. Nelson says the following about faith, hope, and charity:
"''Faith'' is rooted in Jesus Christ. ''Hope'' centers in his Atonement. ''Charity'' is manifest in the 'pure love of Christ.' These three attributes are intertwined like strands in a cable and may not always be precisely distinguished. Together they become our tether to the celestial kingdom. We read in the Book of Mormon: 'There must be faith; and if there must be faith there must also be hope; and if there must be hope there must also be charity.'"
* In verse 14 Ether tells us that the Lord chastened the Brother of Jared for 3 hours "because he remembered not to call upon the name of the Lord." Ether recounts the chastening by the Lord just 14 verses after reporting the great blessings the Lord gave the Brother of Jared for diligently calling on the Lord (see [[Ether 1:43|chapter 1:43]]). What are we to make of the contrast between these two events so closely juxtaposed in Ether's account?
* Also, what ''specifically'' do the scriptures mean when they say that the Brother of Jared hadn't been calling upon the name of the Lord? Had he stopped praying altogether? Most likely not. How then does one interpret the scriptural phrase, "call upon the name of the Lord?"
*vs. 16-22 - It is interesting to note how the Lord commands the Brother of Jared to build barges "after the manner of barges which ye have hitherto built," probably giving reference to the barges that are mentioned earlier in chapter 3. The Jaredites had already built barges and used them to cross waters while they were travelling in the wilderness. However, the second time the Jaredites built barges, the Brother of Jared had to inquire of the Lord as to what they should do have light and air in them. Why? Perhaps the first ones were only used for crossing small distances. Or perhaps they were ''similar'' to the second ones, but still slightly different (i.e. more like a boat). It's fun to ponder little details like this about the Book of Mormon!
* vs. 18 - In this verse can be seen the power of food storage. When the Nephites gathered together in the lands of Zarahemla and Bountiful, they took with them provisions that would last them seven years (see vs. 4). Due to this preparation, the Gadianton robbers were unable to effectively lay siege on the Nephites. And having no provisions themselves, the robbers eventually ended up having to abandon their plan. In our day, the First Presidency has said, "Through careful planning, most Church members can, over time, establish...a year’s supply of essentials." (from a letter dated 20 January 2002, sent to Priesthood leaders - see ''Liahona'', Apr. 2003)
* vs. 15 - I have also pondered a lot about how the Lamanite's skin became white, as it says in this verse. I wonder if it was an immediate change or a gradual change. I've also considered the thought that maybe these particular people's skin didn't acutally change, but rather they gave birth to children that had white instead of dark skin. I've also wondered why it happened at this time and not at other times. Has something similar ever happened in modern times? One can only speculate as far as I know.
